The 2009 Tour de France event was the 96th held. It started in Monaco on 4 July, with a prologue through Monaco's streets. The second stage was also held in Monaco. In total, the tour will visited a total of six nations: Monaco, France, Spain, Andorra, Switzerland and Italy. The total length of the tour for this year was 3,445 km (or 2,141 miles). There was unprecedented international interest in this event as seven time winner Lance Armstrong made a successful comeback to this event, in the name of promoting cancer awareness. He finished third (see winners list). The winner was Alberto Contador of Spain riding for the Astana team.
