The 12-strong Australian team returned from the Los Angeles Games with five medals: three gold, one silver and a bronze. The three gold medals matched the record total from Paris in 1924. Considering the size of the team, it was a very successful Olympics for Australia.

- Swimmer Clare Dennis was the youngest woman to win a gold medal in Los Angeles, aged 16.
- Swimming legend Andrew "Boy" Charlton carried the Australian flag at the Opening Ceremony. He did not win a medal in 1932, unlike unlike the previous Olympic Games in 1924 and 1928.
